PROBIOTICS APPLICATION WITH DIFFERENT CARBON SOURCES FOR WATER QUALITY MAINTENENCE AND PRODUCTION PERFORMANCE IN SANGKURIANG CATFISH (CLARIAS GARIEPINUS) CULTURE

Abstract. Intensive catfish farming has the potential to increase toxic inorganic compounds. Biofloc is a way to offset the negative effects of the amount of ammonia converted to floc by utilising heterotrophic bacteria with the addition of carbon sources. This study analysed the effects of carbon types on water quality and growth performance. This study employed a completely randomised design with three treatments and three replications, namely probiotics + molasses, probiotics + wheat flour, and probiotics + sugar. The results of this research showed that wheat flour and sugar can be used as carbon substitutes for molasses. The results also explained that sugar treatment was the best, showed that the lowest ammonia (0.36±0.00 mg/L) and nitrite (0.23±0.00 mg/L) values, as well as the highest total bacterial colonies (TBC) (4.0±0.4 CFU/mL) and volume of floc (22.41±1.99 mL/L). The addition of carbon sources influenced ammonia, nitrite, total bacterial colon and floc volume (P<0.05).
